Review: The Wind Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami by Murphy Horner, August 16
The review appeals to all five senses. It makes the book feel like something to experience, rather than just read. And anyone who calls a book "chewy" deserves some recognition.
Review: Velvet Elvis by Rick Stilwell, August 16
I'd given no thought at all to reading this book until I read the review. In fact, I've walked past it in the store several times. The next time I go, I'm picking up the book. And isn't that the point of a good review - to make you want to buy the book?

MUSIC: Temple Stark's picks of the week
CD Review: Numero Cinco - Billy Watson and the International Silver String Submarine Band by Joan Hunt, August 17
Joan finds herself laughing at the blues. A rip on the album, it's not. A rip-roaring romp? Apparently. There's a lot of character in the writing. It's enjoyable even if I have no intention of buying the CD (though blues with a sense of humor is always something to treasure).
Elvis is Everywhere by Michele Catalano, the day the music died. Sorry, I mean August 16.
Had Little Miss Catalano paid more attention to her mother's idol, she would have heeded some advice: "Don't Be Cruel." LOL. Michelle tells the 28-year-old tale of being a 14-year-old snark in telling Mrs. C of Elvis' death. Instead of Little Miss Catalano offering her own shoulder for a little "Love Me Tender" the teenage fan of Jim Morrison instead did the Bossa Nova all over her heart. They've since made up - probably.

CULTURE/ TECH Lisa Hoover's pick of the week.
Picks coming, courtesy of a temporary replacement. Ms. Hoover broke her hand and hasn't been exactly swift on the typing due to well, pain. Ah, it's tough being a BC Editor LOL
