Blogcritics Editors' Picks 7 02 05 to 7 08 05 - Page 3

Part of: Editors' Picks

Iommi - Fused
Chris Akin, July 6
Just because reading Akin's reviews of metal - as well as others - has over the last few months really brought me back into my first love - heavy metal - and this took me on a journey back through a lot of names.

Poco - The Essential Poco
Joan Hunt, July 8
Poco? El Loco. In comments Joan says people might recognize the music, just not the band. That happens a lot. Describes a nice relationship between her personal history and this band - but not in a junkie groupie way.

Concert Review-Faith Evans @ House OF Blues-Wednesday June 29
Laron Cue, July 8
Faith's career is right on the edge. Cue presents the experience of a concert with the tattoo-adorned songstress. She's out on a House of Blues tour.

DVD: MC5 - Kick Out the Jams
Pete Blackwell, July 8
Why did I not know there was an actual entity as the White Panther Party? I know of the Grey Panthers. The DVD is "live" the same way much of KISS ALIVE was not really live. It's a great thumbnail history of a band likely more name-checked than heard.

Documentary: 930 F Street
Elizabeth Boody, July 8 (must resist horrible joke she's heard 900,708 times before)
Well describes a documentary of the history of a club - and those groups who were attracted. As Bernie Mac might say, "Good Livin'. Good Livin'. One imagines it was A Lil' Ole Bitty Pissant Country Place. The filmmakers are looking for a distributor.

You've Got Mayall
RJ Eskow, July 7
Topical at beginning and end and in between, offered a lot of great detail and love for the man who has carried a great chunk of music history on his back for decades.

HONORABLE MENTION / GREAT QUOTAGE: I felt bad for laughing, but I did: Now imagine a retarded cat with a broken leg spending 40 minutes on the keyboard trying to get comfortable… that is the sound we have achieved here. Part of Lono trying to explain why Adrian Belew's "Side 2" was a travesty. Actually the whole thing is pretty funny, including the reminder that Dark Side of the Moon could have been made to be the soundtrack to Wizard of Oz

VIDEO: Eric Berlin's pick of the week

The Incredible Hulk - You won't like him when he's angry, Alonzo Mosley (FBI), July 5
Alonzo Mosley (FBI) takes us back to the shirt-ripping days of television lore.

BHW: Gracias for the props. I will be sure to shower the train people with free gifts on this evening's ride.

Thanks for the EP. Dave Freer deserves at least ten times the publicity.

And i just noticed the other editors pick interview i did with Lois Bujold is not in the list of interviews.

This is off-topic, but ... I'm Blogcritic of the day??? I'm going to faint.

What did I do right, so I can keep on doing it?

Sadly, while the post picks of the week are merit-based, the Blogcritic of the Day is awarded based on, well, being an active Blogcritic. In other words, keep the good work in general, there was nothing specific that earned you the spot. :-)

So it's the equivalent of having a perfect attendance record in school? I'm today's version of "Miss (sic) Congeniality"?

Well then, um, thanks for the, uh, honor. Yay!

    Chels gets a two-fer.

And she and I both agree this wasn't her best work. Once she gets up to full speed you'll be all blown away.

Yeah sorry about that Matt. I'll make sure it doesn't happen again.

    GRIN.

BTW - Congrats you two, The original OC

Wow, twice in one week. Whatever bhw's smoking/snorting/shooting up, I'd appreciate a hit. ;)

At any rate, thanks for the props. I'm just lucky to be blabbing my unwanted opinion with the best.
