Billionaire Bankrolls SpaceShipOne

Microsoft founder and billionarie, Paul G. Allen, confirmed speculation that he is the long-rumored sponsor behind SpaceShipOne. SpaceShipOne is one of the first major, non-governmental efforts to build a manned spacecraft.

The spacecraft broke the sound barrier in its first manned test flight on Wednesday, December 17.

Paul Allen is quoted as saying:

"As we celebrate the centennial of flight, it's wonderful to be able to capture the spirit of innovation and exploration in aviation. SpaceShipOne is a tangible example of continuing humankind's efforts to travel into space, and effectively demonstrating that private, non-government resources can make a big difference in this field of discovery and invention."

What's especially interesting is that SpaceShipOne is a contender for a $10 Million prize, called the X Prize, for the first private manned space flight.

The X Prize has already registered 20 teams from 7 countries to compete for the prize.

Hmmm. I never realized that building space ships was such a hot start-up category.
