If you're on the lookout for a better ride in 2005 ... they've got 10 to choose from over at Car and Driver, the car enthusiasts' pinup magazine. "How does one go about narrowing the list down to the 10 best," you ask? Car and Driver's got it down to a science ... they've only been at it since 1983. This year the selections were whittled from 44 entries for everything from windy country road handling to how much room you have to get your groove on in the back seat.
To be considered for the list, vehicles had to be available for purchase in U.S. auto dealerships by January, 2005 and they had to cost less than $70,000. Manufacturers provided the vehicles for testing and the magazine's staff only considered vehicles they had actually driven. (cnnmoney)
This year's list is filled with a good mix of old favorites and a few new surprises. One of the biggest surprises is that 4 of the 10 are domestics! The traditional American companies have realized that the foreign models have been edging them out of sales over time and have made painstaking efforts to regain some of that lost market ... and it shows. The American icons are: (I modified the categories a little)
- better for the curves - the stylish new lines of the almighty Chevrolet Corvette (an 11-year veteran)
- better poor man's Bentley - the $33,495 Chrysler 300C
- better junk in the trunk - Dodge Magnum (with 250 horses .... this ain't yo mama's wagon)
- better VROOOM - the classic retro lines of the 300 hp Ford Mustang
