Concert Review: Slash – Bridgestone Arena, 2/16 in Nashville

On February 16, Slash and Ozzy Osbourne brought the Scream tour to Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, one of the last shows in what must have been a grueling five-week-tour schedule. They hit the stage with the kind of energetic, fuel-injected performances rarely seen from veteran metal bands these days, let alone from veteran metal bands playing arenas. A natural barrier to intimacy exists between performer and audience in such venues and too often it makes the show feel like a “show,” so slickly professional that it feels like they’re just up there doing their jobs, that they might as well have been wearing a suit and tie.

There was none of that when Slash took to the stage. The stage set was simple enough: a large backdrop of Slash’s latest self-titled album; nothing to distract from the powerful performances of the musicians on the stage. Slash and Myles Kennedy were absolutely incredible together; a powerhouse of pile-driving, ass-kicking rock and roll.

As the band rolled through their setlist it was obvious that they were having the time of their lives playing for the audience. Slash was absolutely glorious as he stalked the stage, stopping occasionally to drive the crowd crazy with a power stand, his signature Les Paul flashing with a life of its own.

slash_myles_kennedy_tourThey opened the show with a hard-driving version of “Ghost,” which originally featured Ian Astbury from The Cult on vocals. It was one of three songs from Slash’s solo album played on this tour, the other two being “Back From Cali” and the power ballad “Starlight,” both of which were recorded with Myles Kennedy from Alter Bridge before he joined Slash in the line-up of this tour.

Their set also featured covers of Velvet Revolver’s “Slither” and a few from Slash’s Snakepit. From the Guns N’ Roses vault Slash pulled out classics “Night Train,” “My Michelle” and a crushing version of “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” which had the audience on their feet and singing along. By the time they wrapped for the night with “Paradise City,” Myles Kennedy and Slash owned Nashville, no doubt about it. This is one concert that no one is going to forget any time soon.

If the Scream tour is any indication of how Slash is going to rock audiences this summer, then all I can say is get your ass out to the rock and roll showthis is a concert that no one should miss!
