Comedian John Mulaney recently released his debut one-hour Comedy Central stand-up special, New In Town, on DVD. New In Town was filmed over the course of two nights at the Skirball Theater in New York City. It was executive produced by Mulaney, John Irwin, Dave Becky, and David Miner and directed by Ryan Polito.
The 29-year-old Chicago native started doing stand-up at age 20. Mulaney joined the writing staff at Saturday Night Live in 2008. Fun fact: he co-created Bill Hader’s popular club-hopping character, Stefon.
New In Town definitely brings the funny. Mulaney has a knack for self-deprecating humor, while sharing stories from throughout his life. He speaks of being bullied as a kid, tells an amazing tale about a high school party thrown by his teacher’s son and why it’s one of the reasons he doesn’t drink anymore, and talks about how adults find joy in doing nothing, which he discusses in the clip below.
I really enjoyed the various pop culture references made throughout the special. For instance, we learn about Mulaney’s love for Law and Order: SVU and that he can do a spot-on impersonation of Ice-T. One of my favorite bits was his reference to a movie from the early 1990s by the name of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Check out the clip below.
Not only does the New In Town DVD feature the uncensored and extended version of the Comedy Central special; it also includes “Special Friends Video Commentary.” Comedians Anthony Jeselnik and Dan Mintz roast Mulaney as they all watch and hilariously critique New In Town together.
The other bonus feature on the DVD is “Mintz/Mulaney: The Interview.” I had previously seen clips of this interview online as promo for New In Town, but it’s great to watch it in full.
