I watched Coldplay on MTV tonight and I think that I am going to dig their new album. They did a live performance of a bunch of the songs on the show and they all sound very good. Light, airy and trippy just like the last album.
One thing in particular hit me while I was watching the show. Not that I have any delusions of grandeur as a musician, but Coldplay gives lots of bands hope. Sure, there will always be ridiculous bands like Rush, Dream Theater and basically every death metal band in the world, that can play their instruments with an expertise that puts most musicians to shame.
But then, when a band like Coldplay comes in and they don’t do a single thing, technically, that most bands couldn’t also physically execute, they give us all hope that good music doesn’t equal intense levels of musicianship all the time. Don’t get me wrong, they have a great sound and beautiful songs, but they don’t require you to be a graduate of Berklee school of music in order to play the guitar licks, piano parts, drums and vocal lines. Hell, I would guess most Junior High bands could count the beats for their songs.
While many bands (my band included) have a long way to go, to get to Coldplay’s level, if we just continue to concentrate on writing good songs with a lot of melody, it is somewhat feasible that we all could one day write at least one song as good as something that Coldplay has written.
Then the only question is, whether or not I get to father the baby of a beautiful Hollywood actress.
Probably not, but I can dream can’t I?Powered by Sidelines
