One of the most highly anticipated events of Coachella 2005 — the reunion of Cocteau Twins — sadly will not be. From the press release:

It is with regret that Cocteau Twins announce they will not be performing at the Coachella Valley Music Festival on April 30th as had been planned. Due to personal reasons, member Elizabeth Fraser has decided that she is unable to participate in the reunion, and apologies for any inconvenience that this has caused.

After the smashing success of the Pixies reunion at Coachella 2004, it was hoped that Cocteau Twins would keep the reunion momentum going.

From Soulshine:

Cocteau Twins first broke-up quietly in 1998 while they working on a follow-up to their 1996 album “Milk & Kisses”. The band formed in 1979, with lead singer Elizabeth Fraser defining their sound with unique, ethereal vocals. Not including their recent “reunion” Cocteau Twins were together for 15 years and eight proper albums.

While there is still a very strong lineup in the works for the April 30 – May 1 music and arts festival, including Weezer, Chemical Brothers, Wilco, New Order, and Prodigy, we’ll all be waiting to see if there will be a late surprise addition.

Does this mean that they will not be recording and touring together? Or, does it simply mean that they won’t be appearing at this festival?

Without a doubt, the Cocteau Twins are one of the most unique-sounding “alternative” bands, before the term was bastardized in the early 90’s.

One of my favorite albums of theirs is “Heaven or Las Vegas.” Sublime and more commercially appealing than most of their other albums.

Just what in the bloody hell is “Pearly-Dewdrops’ Drops” about?

I love the Cocteau Twins and I am sorry to hear about the problems with their reunion tour though I wish they could at least come out with one new song. My favorite album is Garland(import) and also Heaven or Las Vegas.

I was never a huge fan, actually, so I’m not too broken up about it. However, it would have been a great moment for Coachella.
