A Hamilton, Ontario Canada mother has been charged for knowingly infecting her newborn with the HIV virus. The 29 year old knew she was HIV positive and ignored medical advice that would have protected her baby. This is believed to be the first case of this nature in all of Canada.
Police allege that the women lied about her condition when at the hospital prior to delivering her second child last year then failed to take precautions to further protect the infant. The child, born last September has since tested positive for the virus. The mother was charged last week with failing to provide the necessities of life and with negligence causing bodily harm.
The mother contracted HIV prior to the birth of her first baby, but followed strict guidelines that were given to her by doctors. The first child does not have the virus. The chances of a baby contracting aids drops from 25% to 1% if the child is given a cocktail of anti-viral drugs at birth and if the mother does not breast feed. The mother went to a second hospital to deliver her second child, did not tell anyone of her conditon and reportedly breast feed the infant.
The mother made a brief appearance in front of the magistrate two weeks ago and the trial was held over until today (May 31), with today being her bail hearing.Powered by Sidelines
