Web Comics Tackle Oil Spill

Part of: A Dose of Awesome

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill is one of the worst environmental disasters the planet has ever seen. To top it off BP are still at a loss as to how to stop the flow of oil and best clean up the damage. In response to the problem they opened up a submission process to the public who could submit ideas to stop and help clean up the massive oil spill. Even actor Kevin Costner, and a device he has been funding for years, has been tried in an attempt to help out. Now the lively web comic community has given the crisis their spin with two comics showing the video game communities response to the crisis and Michael Bay's worst case scenario, the results are hilarious.

The crisis is at a point where it's almost beyond the word crisis. Even disaster doesn't seem to fit, it's just that bad. Almost as bad as the tragedy is the fact that it hasn't been stopped. Even though this is the case I don't feel the least bit concerned that these comics make me laugh. It's almost like laughing about it is the only thing we've got left.

The video game comic, by Jeremy Vinar and Mike Fahmie, shows video game favorites Link, Mario and Sam Fisher doing what they do best. I loved the Link picture where he's placing the boulder on the pipe. It really captures the essence of the game and places it into the situation. The Sam Fisher picture is kind of scary because of the large grins on the BP execs. It really doesn't paint them in a good light at all, and I think I speak for most people when I say wouldn't it be grand if Sam just popped down and took care of them?

While the video game comic presents possible solutions to the problem the Michael Bay comic reminds us that things could be worse, a hell of a lot worse. All I can say is thank god we don't live in Michael Bay's world; otherwise, an oil spill would be the least of our concerns.

Like I said maybe it is wrong of me to laugh at these renditions of the crisis but I find it better to laugh at these than sit around and pondering just how seriously screwed the spill is and the lack of successful action is. Agree, disagree?
