The Early Word: New Books for the Week of June 3, 2007

Part of: The Early Word

Among the considerations for Father's Day are new books by Ian McEwan, Robert B. Parker, Gerald Levert, Eric Van Lustbader, Carl Bernstein, Michael Ondaatje, and Clive Cussler.

FICTION:

Divisadero by Michael Ondaatje

"We live," Michael Ondaatje declares in the structurally lopsided but lyrical and alluring Divisadero, "with those retrievals from childhood that coalesce and echo throughout our lives ... We live permanently in the recurrence of our own stories, whatever story we tell." The effects of borders, acts of separation, and a sense of isolation are suggested even in the title of Ondaatje’s wide-ranging new novel, the word "divisadero" itself coming from the Spanish word for "division." But with other implications for the elegiac and episodic work’s thematic journeying, for the need to seek out, and for the probative searching for answers — allusions that may also derive from the word divisar, meaning to "gaze at something from a distance" — another concept also looms large and takes hold in Divisadero. The marked complexity of ye-shall-find accounts recounted aptly and tidily turns out "as a folded map places you beside another geography." Still, like attempts to refold a map, life is messy, and the storyline of the novel seemingly slips into disarray at times, becoming disjointed before it ultimately recaptures its promise.
