I read Pierre Assouline's biography of Georges Simenon a few years ago. After posting the information about the reissued Maigret's, I discovered the book is out of print but available for practically nothing.
If you've read the Maigret's or find larger-than-life artists interesting, this biography reads like fiction. Simenon had thousands of lovers, he wrote many of his novels in eight days, he negotiated his own publishing contracts, he was a reporter at 16, his daughter committed suicide, etc., etc. Wild stuff.
