Panels #8: DC Comics, Marvel Comics, etc.

Comics I Loved

Justice Society of America #10

It has to be impossible for a comic book to be this great with such consistency. For ten issues, I have not even disliked a Justice Society story. An older, grayer Superman appears in the present day. Through Starman and this older Superman, the Justice Society learn that this Superman has come from one of the alternate earths, an earth where most of the superheroes are dead, partly do to their own oversight.

Big time DC Comics fans know this future as Kingdom Come, an Elseworlds story, by Mark Waid and Alex Ross. The Kingdom Come history was just an alternate future story that had no real weight in the DC Comics Universe, but the series 52 made the Kingdom Come future one of the 52 parallel Earths.

If you didn’t read 52, that’s a shame, but you’re still okay with me. Anyway, both the Justice Society and Superman are separately figuring out why this universe jump has happened. I’m not a man who likes to spoil, so all I’ll say is that one side makes a decision. Also, there is a tie-in of sorts to Countdown, a series I am not reading. The tie-in is about the death of the New Gods, so that might be interesting.

There’s nothing else to say other than that Justice Society of America is amazing, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. If I have to say it a million times, I will.

New Avengers #35

There isn’t as much symbiote action in this as the cover of New Avengers #35 would lead you to believe. Still, this is a great issue even though not one of the Avengers is to be seen.

This story focuses on villains, many of whom I can’t identify by sight. Truthfully, I don’t even know who many of these villains are even if their names are said. The point is not to know who these bad guys are, but to know that the Red Hood has organized many of them and is planning to take advantage of the post Civil War shake-up.

I know that this partnership that the Red Hood has devised cannot end well, but so far it’s paying off for the underworld. They’re united, and they have the Deathlok cyborg. If the plan blows up in their faces, at least it’ll be fun to see these criminals get what’s coming to them.
