Panels #5: DC Comics

Birds of Prey #105

You had me at the cover. Nicola Scott has a style that is pretty and perfect for Birds of Prey. If you’ve got a good writer (Gail Simone) then you don’t want bad or mediocre art to bring things to a halt. On top of the great art, I love the bubble gum flavored colors of the covers.

In this issue, continuing the fight between the Secret six and the Birds of Prey team, there’s some sort of crazy witchcraft scheme that involves the legend of Grigori Rasputin. As I read, I pretend to know what this is all about, but I don’t. Getting back to the Sinister Six, four of them are without a ride, after Hawkgirl Showed up to trash their car. Secret Six member Scandal is further away on a motorcycle, chasing the BoP, who have stolen a precious piece of technology, that also held some living cargo.

Hawkgirl swoops down to take out Scandal, but Scandal‘s not having any of that, whatsoever. This is where Hawkgirl proves that she can handle herself without an nth metal mace or airborne maneuvers. I‘m a big fan of a straight up one-on-one bare knuckle slobberknocker, and when these two fight, I was not dissatisfied.

We learn some more details this issue, like who the very interesting sixth member of the Secret Six is, and why someone who is supposed to be dead showed up inside a Rocket Red suit. Why she is important to the Russians is not clear yet. This issue is relatively light on action, but on the last page, it looks like there’s going to be one tremendous fight next issue.

My Verdict
Liked it.

The Comics This Week

Justice League of America #8

This is the beginning of “The Lightning Saga,” the crossover between the Justice Society and League of America, combining the talents of writers Brad Meltzer and Geoff Johns. For starters, JLA #8 has an outstanding cover with Batman, Mr. Terrific and Legionnaire Karate Kid. It gets you excited for a team-up even before you know what you’re in for.

Before we get to the heart of the mystery, the members of both the JLA and JSA participate in superhero styled fun and games. JSA Member Mr. Terrific takes on two chess opponents at once, JLA members Green Lantern and Black Canary. Other JSA and JLA members play capture the flag within a virtual space, making the field of play look like a cemetery.
