Today, I finished up J. Michael Straczynski's Supreme Power: Contact. The writing of the story is very familiar to anyone who has been through JMS' works before — not everthing is what it seems, the upfront story is always a distraction for the real deal and no one is exactly what they seem to be.
This book, however, has a first of X feel to it. Characters are introduced, some framework to a plot is established, but not much else happens. I can see the outlines of somethings to come (the "bad guy" probably isn't as bad as he's being set up to be; the converse to the "good guy"). The only interesting point thus far revolves around the treatment of the main character by the US government.
The main character is more or less a knock-off of superman. An infant found in a spaceship by Ma and Pa out in the sticks. The difference here is that the government moves in to investigate, appropariate the child for itself (since all orphans without relatives become wards of the state) and then basically brainwash into becoming a tool for the national interests.
I'll be interested in checking out the next release.
