Why did you choose your particular genre?
It’s the genre I’ve been reading in most, the last decade. When I decided to write, I decided to write thrillers. It’s not the only genre I’ll ever write in, though.
Where do you get ideas to write your books?
From light places and dark places. From my past good acts and my own dark and dirty secrets. From my childhood and its end. I don’t think anyone really has the answer to this question, but I’m starting to get a glimmering of an answer for myself. It has to do with a personal collective consciousness, the sweaty, beautiful, noble, ugly ball of everything you’ve ever known or thought or heard or experienced or been. Ideas come from all those places.
Do you blog? If so, what can you tell my readers about the advantages of blogging as a useful tool in book promotion?
I maintain a blog at my website: www.codymcfadyen.com.
I think blogs are great tools. They provide access to you personally, as a writer, which is something most readers seem interested in. I’m terrible about handling my email, and the blogging hopefully makes up for some of that.
It also gives you a forum for promotion, and I’ve had people write and say, ‘thanks, I didn’t know your new book was out, but saw on your blog that it was and now I’m reading it.’ Can’t get more basically effective than that!
How do you deal with a bad review?
I accept that basic truth that all writers must learn if they’re to have peace and harmony within. Do you want to know what it is? Here you go:
All the good reviewers got it right; all the bad reviewers got it wrong.
What’s next for you?
I’m working on book four of the Smoky Barrett series (almost complete), and then we’ll see. My soul needs a break, but more writing will commence. It always does.
Thank you for this great interview, Cody! Do you have any final words you’d like to share with my readers?
Thanks for reading this and for assigning any importance whatsoever to it. Be sure to take any words of wisdom with a grain of your own salt, here, there, and everywhere.
Oh, yes. And please read my books.
