Almost 17, Sheri Kaye Hoff was walking home from school with thoughts of cheerleading and her upcoming birthday party at her grandparent’s home just two days away. Little did she know the shock and the horror that would be waiting for her when she arrived home.
Her brother, just 15 years old, was lying in a pool of blood and pronounced dead.
Sheri tried to overcome her grief over the years, but even after she had children of her own, she never recovered from the sadness that became a part of her life. Even though she became successful in life by many people’s definitions, she was never able to feel joy. “I portrayed joy on the outside,” she said, “…yet I yearned to experience joy.”
Sheri eventually did find joy and decided to help others by becoming a life coach and opening her own practice. It was then she decided to write a book to help others who are looking for joy and happiness, yet they don’t know where to turn to find it.
We interviewed Sheri to find out exactly what a life coach is and how others can learn to find joy when the odds are stacked against them.
Thank you for this interview, Sheri. Can we begin by having you tell us just exactly what a “life coach” is?
A life coach works as a partner with clients. Clients decide on goals and objectives. A life coach offers support, insight, encouragement, wisdom, and objectivity. I find that many small business owners benefit from hiring a life coach because they need an outside view. A life coach can be the catalyst for great change in a person’s life. Life coaches should also have their own coach. I hired a coach when I decided to work on my book, because I needed an objective view on my project. Some life coaches are general and work across many fields. Some work within a niche. A life coach is different from a therapist or a consultant, because you are not in an advising role, you are in a support role. Flexibility is key to successful coaching. Some people benefit from a few sessions, others desire a longer coaching period. I work with a variety of people, but tend to attract people who feel that their spiritual lives are a vital part of their lives.
