Interview with Humor Writer Kelly Epperson, Author of When Life Stinks, It's Time To Wash the Gym Clothes - Page 3

There are over 40 columns, each about 3 pages. It’s light, quick, and readable. Many say it’s a great bathroom reader. I take that as a compliment.

My readers are equally men and women. I take that as a compliment too. How about I share some actual compliments:

You’re a hoot! Beautiful and inspirational. Your wit is charming and delightful to read.

You are funny, down to earth, and not afraid to show your imperfections.

Not many people are able to devour life and share it as beautifully written as you.

One editor says that I’m “Everywoman” yet uniquely me. I want a super hero costume for EveryWoman. So far, I have a pink rhinestone tiara and a magic wand.  I’ll wear tights, but no way does EveryWoman wear a leotard.

What message are you trying to convey with this book?

That life doesn’t stink.

Where do you get ideas to write your books?

People often ask, “What do you write about every week?” My honest reply: Whatever pops into my head.

My two boys give plenty of fodder. Current events and memories of my youth intertwine. I tackle music and fashion. Bras and butts. Andy Gibb and Donny Osmond. Turning 40, going blonde, and beating Madonna in an IQ test.

Besides the silly, I reflect on the serious. Princess Diana, September 11, and world hunger.

Ideas are everywhere. Writing is how I express what’s on my heart. As long as my heart is beating, I’ll be writing.

How do you deal with rejection?

Depending upon my mood, I grab my heart and jut out my lower lip and wail, “Why? Why!” or I have a knee-jerk reaction to flip out my naughty finger. I guess that’s a finger-jerk reaction. Rejection comes via snail mail or email, so no one has ever seen me flip them off.

Do you write mainly by day or by night?

I am a night owl. The wee hours are when I come alive (no, I am not a vampire). It used to be the only time I had to myself. Now, I just love this time when my guys are asleep and the night belongs to me.

Excellent interview. I have to laugh because when I saw that you call your husband The Man About the Place my mind wandered back to Laura and Almanzo Wilder. This is what Laura called Manly and I never thought I would hear that term again.

Read the book and loved it. Best of luck!

I love you! I borrowed that phrase from Laura (with her permission - in spirit) for my first column and it stuck. NO ONE has ever mentioned knowing it was Laura's! I went to Rocky Ridge Farm in Missouri (and cried). :)
