What was your favorite book to read as a child?
I didn’t have a particular favorite book, but I did read every Hardy Boys mystery I could get my hands on.
If you could trade places with one author who you have admired over the years, who would it be and why?
Most definitely Maya Angelou. She writes with a passion and skill that I couldn’t even imitate. Every word she writes – it touches and moves the readers. If the term “literary goddess” could be found in a dictionary, her name would be written beside it.
Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
No Teachers Left Behind represents the frustrations of a public, middle school staff. The teachers in the novel, for the most part, share a common goal – to help their students become better than they are so that they can grow up and become successful adults. Being a teacher involves a great deal more than teaching, and often, much of the other stuff isn’t pleasant. Sometimes, teachers have to deal with overbearing and unsupportive parents and principals. The unmotivated and/or disrespectful students add a burden as well. All that mixed with educational red tape leave some teachers wondering how they came to be wasting their lives. Using a series of emails, poems, and brief conversations, the teachers of No Teachers Left Behind share their frustrations and disappointments, in hopes of remembering why they became educators.
Where do you get ideas to write your books?
I’ve always chosen to write what I know. As a practicing teacher, who deals with frustration every day, it was an obvious choice. All I had to do was think about the things I deal with everyday and then create tiny stories around those scenarios.
What’s next for you?
Right now, I’m working on a children’s book, and after that, well let’s just say that the sequel to No Teachers Left Behind is already buzzing around in my head.
