Interview: Jim Colombo, Author of The Keys to the Vault

I recently had the wonderful pleasure of interviewing Jim Colombo, author of the mystery The Keys to the Vault.  He came up with some great answers and I can't tell you how excited I am to be able to share my thoughts on his book in the very near future!

If you had to summarize your life and give it a book title, what would that title be?

That’s a great question. Perhaps “… and now for some dessert.” After working away all of these years I am ready to enjoy some of the sweet things life has to offer. I love to travel, so that would be one dessert. Spending time with family and friends would be another. There are so many new things to experience and learn. I love new challenges.

What are you reading right now?

I just finished Summer Lightning by P.G. Wodehouse. It really made me laugh out loud. He crafts his stories in a very clever way, and has the ability to add humorous twists as he builds the tale. Next on my list will probably be the new Dan Brown story, if I can ever get down to the local bookstore.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

There are so many to choose from. I enjoy reading Carol Higgins Clark, Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum, and Lilian Jackson Braun’s Cat Who series along with Colin Dexter, and P.D. James. My favorite author is probably Agatha Christie.

If you could have lunch and chat with any author, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Agatha Christie. I would love to find out what makes her mind work in the subtle and oh so clever ways that it does. Then again, wouldn’t Jules Verne be an interesting companion to share a lunch with.

Could you please tell us about your writing process?

I like to have a general idea of what I want to accomplish in a story, before proceeding too far down the road. This I usually do in my head. If I like what I have, I will get the major points down on paper in a somewhat organized way. Once I have a general story line, I then feel comfortable enough to go ahead and fill in all of the details of actually writing the story. Of course, things usually change along the way, so I end up revising the story line a few times at least, making me wonder why I bother with it in the first place! Once it is complete, I usually put it aside for a bit, then go back to it to make corrections and revisions, until I am happy with the final product.
