Interview: Author Elizabeth Kail Arnita Gives More Than the Love of Reading to Children

Part of: The Spirit of Christianity

Debut Christian children’s book author Elizabeth Kail Arnita was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and is the youngest of 12 children. Early in life, she learned about family dynamics and the concept of sharing. Elizabeth graduated from college in 1983, with a degree in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. She married her devoted husband Shadi and together they have been blessed with four fabulous children. Elizabeth’s love for the Lord has opened her eyes to a world in need. This has ignited her compassion for those who are less fortunate. She and her husband founded and continue to manage Welcome The Children; a non-profit organization that funds and supports children who are experiencing the reality of poverty. Elizabeth Kail Arnita has designated all of the proceeds from her book sales to support their cause.

Elizabeth was happy to chat about what inspired her writing. She shared life experiences are the most interesting and inspiring stories, of which she has a few to share from her own personal background, along with those of others she and the team at Welcome The Children have helped. Elizabeth said, “As a budding author, I look at life scenarios and imagine how they can become a story that exemplifies a life lesson.”

A lot of times, inspiration comes to authors while sleeping or in the shower. Elizabeth was fast to admit many of her ideas come in the middle of the night. “I will often wake up and write down ideas with the paper and pen I keep handy next to my bed,” shared Elizabeth. “That starts a ball rolling and then I proceed to the computer where a lot of cutting and pasting goes on.”

Her debut Christian children’s picture book Baby Come Home was inspired by a true-life story that proved to be a good life lesson. The book tells a similar story. In the book, a bird named Baby learns the value of unconditional love and acceptance after he decides to break free from the confinement of his cage and those who love him most. The story gives children a different perspective on rules and why we need to obey them. Elizabeth shared, “When I hear, taste or see something good, I have to let others know. The same rings true for a good story. My daughter," she continues, "was in the rebellious teen years when every rule was viewed as a hindrance to her growing up and enjoying life. She would often tell me I was caging her and stopping her from experiencing the world.”
