As promised, I want to continue to interview as many African American authors as possible. Today, I have the honor to interview Lynette Roberts.
Can you tell the readers about yourself?
I'm from Savannah, GA born and raised; currently living in Atlanta, GA. I love to travel, read, and listen to music.
What inspired you to start writing children’s books?
I always loved to write and working with children really inspired me to publish Princess Atelia and the Wishing Star.
What are your thoughts on the lack of children’s books that portray children of color in a positive light?
One can either, sit, wonder, and complain or actually do something about it. We must all support each other to get ethnic books in our schools, local libraries, homes, etc
Do you have children? What kind of books do you like to expose them to?
No, I do not have any children.
What in your opinion are the most important thing African American authors can do to make a huge dent in the children’s publishing world?
The most important is that we must support one another. We must market ourselves harder, start our own companies, along with support from the community.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the readers?
Princess Atelia and The Wishing Star is a not so ordinary, but ultra extraordinary princess tale. Atelia is a young girl with tomboyish ways, facing a real elementary school dilemma, “what do I want to be when I grow up.” Confused and dismayed, she lands on an unexpected choice, which prompts her classmates’ taunts and teases. A lesson on the pitfalls of aspiring to be someone you are not, Atelia goes through a whirlwind of ups and downs before realizing her virtue.
