The 2002 Hugo Awards were announced last night at the World Science Fiction Convention in San Jose. Notable winners include:

  • NOVEL: American Gods, Neil Gaiman (Morrow)

  • NOVELETTE: "Hell Is the Absence of God", Ted Chiang (Starlight 3, Tor)
  • SHORT STORY: "The Dog Said Bow-Wow", Michael Swanwick (Asimov's Oct/Nov 2001)
  • DRAMATIC PRESENTATION: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (New Line Cinema/The Saul Zaentz Company/WingNut Films; Directed by Peter Jackson; Screenplay by Fran Walsh & Phillipa Boyens & PJ; PJ, Barrie M. Osborne and Tim Sanders, Producers)

Congratulations to all the winners, and special congratulations to Jo Walton, who won the John W. Campbell Award for best new author. Jo's not only one of the few award-winning authors I've met, she's the only one ever to supply me with a recipe for macaroni and cheese. I'm sure dozens of others are clamoring to enter that category...
