Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Review - Comments Page 29

At about 11 at night, I went to the local Borders bookstore and got in line to get a copy of the new Harry Potter book. There were perhaps 400 people there purchasing books, and the place was a madhouse. The staff was lucky to avert a mob scene. It was a gathering of kindred spirits: costumed fans of all ages leaned against the shelves and discussed arcane plot points, played Harry Potter trivia games, and took turns complaining about the movie adaptations. At midnight a cheer went up and everyone bought their books and left to begin reading them. I was not among those who pulled an all-nighter and read the whole thing, but I finished it at eight tonight.…

Spoiler Stuff-All that follows will ruin HBP.
I cannot believe that Dumbledore would leave himself so vulnerable unless he wanted to be killed by Snape. If this is the case then JKR has him seriuosly out of character (I think), and I will place this book at the bottom of the list. We won't really know until after we read the 7th book, dammit. (At first I was deeply disappointed that she "killed him off". After some thought I assumed that he allowed himself to be killed by Snape and possibly planned it that way for many of the reasons stated above.) First, he lets Malfoy outmanuver him by figuring a way to get the Death Eaters into Hogwarts. Impossible! Then he misjudged Snape. I can't fathom the Dumbledore character misjudging such a crucial member of the Order. I also can't believe that he would allow himslef to be trapped unless he had reason to do so. After all, he is "the only one that Voltemort ever feared". Every other critical part of the series he seems to be one step ahead of the rest. He either needed to become a martyr to rally the "good guys" for the ultimate defeat of Voltemort or there is another plot twist coming that allows his death (and possible rebirth??) to give Harry what he needs to destroy Volty! He can't be the most powerful Wizard in the world (besides Voltemort) and allow himself to be murdered. If he died simply by accident without planning this himself somehow, I will retroactively loath the HBP. Someone tell me I'm right or I might just go out and burn my copy of the HBP.

In a way, AD death reminds me of the Coronicles of Narania. When Aslan died and was reborn because of some ancient magic/ prophecy. I hope this is what happens in book 7!

I read The Choronicles of Narnia [ well , I`m in the middle of book 4.] Yeah , I hope Dumbledore does what Aslan does ! And don`t burn books !

Ok , now I`m thinking Snape got there where they thought the horcrux was and changed the potion so it made you safe from Avada Kedavra. So that way , he would pretend to kill Dumbledore so Voldemort would think Snape was loyal to him so he would let Snape become a Death Eater again. But really Snape would be spying. That way , Dumbledore and Snape ,Harry , Hermione , Ron , the order ect. would come and help Harry kill of some of the Death Eaters and possibly make Voldemort more injured ect. and then Harry will face Voldemort alone...........alone........alone..................alone.............alone...........ok I`m done saying alone. So , yeah I think that will happen. And Harry has to go back to Hogwarts ! And what if the ghosts of Harry`s parents are at Godric`s Hollow when he goes there ? I can`t WAIT till the 7th book ! Then all these questions will be answered.

I think this book was powerful and amazng. I feel that it was a bit too short and I can say that i was thouroughly surprised at the ending (I won't give it away). It did make me extremely sad and I had this thought in my head as if I couldn't believe it had actually happened. i had to be constantly reminded that, yes, it is just a book. I think Harry and his girlfriend (I won't say who) had a great thing going. Too bad Harry had to break up with here so soon. I was mildly surprised about who the half blood prince was (I won't say who it is). I wasn't totally surprised because, after all, it was a potion's book. I think that R.A.B. could be 1) Remember Amelia Bones. or 2) Regulus Alphred Black. I think Snape was acting on Dumbledore's order when he did the unforgivable act. I think Dumbledore had told Snape to play the part of Death Eater even if it meant death. Dumbledore had to plead and Snape had to act as if he hated Dumbledore. Although you must remember this line "Hatred was etched in every feature of his face" or something like that. Myabe it wasn't an act. In any case, I cannot wait for the last book. It comes out (supposedly) 07/07/07 at 12:00 AM in England Saturday morning. That would be 7:00 somewhere in the U.S.A. So someone could get the book at 7:07 07/07/07. I would love to be that person. unfortunately I probably won't be. I hope you have enjoyed my veiws on the Half Blood Prince. Thank you for reading this.

I don't know if people are still reading this blog now that the book has been out for so long but thought I might just add one more thing to the billions of guesses people are making!
In "The Prisoner of Azkaban" after H.P. saves Peter Pettigrew's life DD says...(about Pg. 311) "Pettigrew owes his life to you...when one wizard saves another wizard's life, it creates a certain bond between them". So I was thinking that maaaaybeee little rat boy has to try and save H.P. life in the end? Possibly a stupid thought but you never know!
Would be good if someone could either tell me if I'm a complete idiot or whether they agree with me!

I never though of that.......and no your not a complete idiot. I never thought of that.......I really don`t think that it will be Pettigrew who saves Harry`s life..........I think it will be Snape. Seriously , c`mon , Snape isn`t so bad ! Especially after Umbridge........I think Voldemort will be about to kill Harry he starts saying Avada Kedavra but right when he`s about to finish the spell Snape jumps in front to save Harry and dies. Or he blocks the spell.

I was not among those who pulled an all-nighter and read the whole thing, but I finished it at eight tonight.

None of Rowling's strengths from the previous novels have dissipated; she never has a problem keeping the pages turning, and the Harry Potter universe is wonderfully created. Her weaknesses have not deserted her either. There are passages that cry out for an editor, and whenever there is any romance or angst, the characters stiffen. What romance there is seems arbitrary and has little actual consequence. Ron and Hermione are mad at each other for over half the novel, and Harry has a theory that Ron and Hermione both think is wacky, but it seems that Harry has decided to ignore Ron and Hermione's enmity, and Ron and Hermione have decided to ignore Harry's theory. There's never any real attempt at resolving these problems by interaction, and what is resolved is simply forgotten the next time one of them is in danger, as in previous novels.

However, there is one thing that Rowling has gained in this novel, and that is theme. In past novels many of the events have seemed somewhat inconsequential. When Harry broke the rules, he invariably ended up with a slap on the wrist or a pat on the back for some later heroism. In later novels, there began to be unpleasant consequences, and the death of Sirius was a signal that there would be no more playing around.
