Graphic Novel Review: Star Wars: Vector Volume Two by John Ostrander, Rob Williams, Jan Duursema and Dustin Weaver

In 2008 Dark Horse comics came up with Vector, a story in 12 parts that would run through all four of their Star Wars titles – Knights of The Old Republic, Dark Times, Rebellion and Legacy. Many fans weren’t sure it could be done. Since Knights takes place over 3900 years before the events of A New Hope, Dark Times takes place after the events of Revenge of The Sith and before A New Hope; and Rebellion takes place right after, a crossover between those books could be possible. But since Legacy takes place almost 140 years after A New Hope, it didn’t seem likely.

All those fears were put to rest when Vector started in Knights of The Old Republic. A Sith artifact the shape of an insect-like creature with one jeweled eye known the Muur Talisman was created by Sith lord Karness Murr and had the power to infect all non-Force users with the Rakghoul Plague. Muur’s spirit was also contained in the talisman and would attempt to take over any Force user who wore the talisman. In this way, Muur can control the army of Rakghouls through the possessed user.

In Knights, Jedi Zayne Carrick and Celeste Morne find the talisman. When Morne is taken over, Zayne and Celeste find an ancient Sith suspended animation sarcophagus and place her in it. Fast forward several thousand years to Dark Times where Darth Vader and his crew stumble across the sarcophagus and release Morne.  The still-possessed Morne fights Vader who retreats when his men start to be taken over by the plague.

Those six issues were originally told in Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic 25 thru 28 and Star Wars: Dark Times 11 and 12, which were handily reprinted in Star Wars: Vector Volume One

Star Wars: Vector Volume Two reprints Star Wars: Rebellion #15 and 16 and Star Wars: Legacy #28 thru 31.  Picking up some 20 years after the events of Dark Times, Han, Luke and Leia are tricked into going to the moon where Morne still resides after Vader leaks information that the moon was the home of an Imperial secret weapon. Upon arrival, many rebels fall victim to the plague; the inexperienced Luke fights Celeste Morne and is quickly defeated; Leia comes to Luke’s aid and is possessed by the talisman. Now free, Morne chooses to take back the talisman and keep Muur trapped within her. She and the Rakghouls escape in a rebel ship.
