"The true saga of superstar Gloria Trevi and the secret teenage sex cult that stunned the world." With a subtitle like that it's hard not to open the cover of this book.
I faintly remember (or faintly think I remember) Gloria Trevi and the scandal surrounding her from some small item in the newspaper, or on one of the cable entertainment shows. It was quickly forgotten. Now writer Christopher McDougall digs up the alleged real dirt in this story and what dirt it is.
Gloria Trevi was the Mexican Elvis. In 1990 Trevi had three number one hits in Mexico and was the idol of almost every chica in Mexico and South America. By 1998 Gloria and her manager Sergio Andrade would be charged in Mexican courts with corruption of minors after a former backup singer who became his wife published a tell-all book about events surrounding the couple. The singer Aline Hernandez had married Sergio when she was 15 and Andrade was 34. In her book she told how she had been seduced by Andrade when she was only 13 and how others had been similarly recruited and turned into the sex slaves of Sergio.
"Girl Trouble" is a case study in mind control, sexual humiliation, and brainwashing. Andrade preyed upon the adolescent dreams of his underage subjects and used a systematic method of punishment and reward to convince them he alone held the key to their happiness. He charmed the inquiring families of the girls and convinced them that only he could guarantee their daughter's dreams would come true.
The culpability of Gloria Trevi in all these events is open to question. She currently has a new CD out and is trying to make a comeback. Andrade still awaits trial in Mexico having been in prison for five years.
