Frontline's Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero airs Tuesday on many PBS stations (and repeats next week) as part of their We Remember programming. Even for someone like me who is not religious, this is a fascinating and visually beautiful film. It also includes the horrific images many people have not seen of people jumping from the World Trade Center which were also in HBO's excellent "In Memorium" (it will be repeated on September 11th and is now out on DVD). It includes people who maintain their faith, question their beliefs, and criticize religion while remaining religious.
It covers many of the same issues Macky Alston did in a more personal way (focusing on AIDS and cancer) in Questioning Faith which Cinemax showed in June. Filmmaker Helen Whitney gives her personal perspective in an essay on the the documentary's extensive website which also has the full transcripts of some of the interviews including novelist Ian McEwan. Frontline also has posted email reports from producers working on a documentary on the current state of Al Qaeda which will air in November. On Sunday, Frontline presents Campaign Against Terror which features interviews with Colin Powell, Tony Blair, Vladimir Putin, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and others on the the war in war in Afghanistan.
Also, In Search of America begins tonight and runs through Saturday on ABC. The website has excerpts from the companion book by Peter Jennings and Todd Brewster.
