What could be better than celebrating New Years Eve in the DC universe? After fighting with Black Adam and family, I think that the brand new Suicide Squad would much rather be ringing in the New Year. There is a really big “ouch” moment in the middle of the fight, and there’s little wonder as to which side came out on top. Which member of the winning side gives the decisive blow is a surprise, though - a gory, nasty little surprise.
When this much carnage is happening in the world of the Black Marvel family, the action back in America has to be dull in comparison, right? Uh-uh. John Henry Irons is closer to the truth than ever before, The Question is fighting to hold on to life, and oh yeah, it’s the countdown to the New Year.
I felt like time was actually ticking down as I read this. While the world is enjoying the last few minutes of the year 2006, heroes and villains are preparing to head each other off at the pass. As time goes, the reader is on the edge with Lex standing by as a banner carrying his archenemies’ logo drops, and he literally has his hand on the button.
In this 52, I would have been fine with the story just ending after the fight between the Black Marvels and the new Suicide Squad, but I like Lex Luthor’s brand of evil. It’s sneering, confident evil that scares you but also manages to lure you, to intrigue you. I know that I liked a book when I finish reading it and I take a few more looks at random pages, and then I look at the cover.
Man, that cover is really sad. What does it mean? You tell me! I wish it didn’t mean what it implies, but I guess it does. It’s a grim toe tag with a question mark. If you loved the Question in 52 then you and I might have to say goodbye to one more hero.
On the bright side, the bio for this week is Zatanna, who proves that fishnet stockings will never go out of style. A female magician’s outfit is quite strange, but what costume isn’t? In this bio, I am reminded that although she’s been a member of the Justice League, she was a major part of the scandal within the Identity Crisis event. What a naughty, naughty mind wiping magician.
