Comic Review: Metal Gear Solid Issue #2

If you've played the Metal Gear Solid video game, then you know just how fun and exciting it is. The comic book does a great job of capturing the key moments, and doesn't fail to keep you reading. With the combination of great art and a familiar storyline, Metal Gear Solid is indeed a great comic.

Issue 2 kicks off with our hero, Snake, inside of the tank hanger he needed to infiltrate (this was explained in the last issue). If you've played the game, you know exactly what will happen. Snake will rescue the Darpa chief, there will be a shocking scene, and then guns will go blazing.

Unfortunately, this comic book doesn't give us the feeling that something bad has happened. The shocking parts you remember getting excited about in the game are gone way too quickly. Basically, this comic book explains every event that happens after you play 30 minutes into the actual game. The cut scenes in the game are all combined to make this comic. There is nothing new, but it is a good way to refresh your memory of the game instead of just playing it over again.

What helps this comic a lot is Ashley Wood's art style. Instead of the traditional comic form, the style that is dark. The images are blurry and faded, darkly shaded. I absolutely love it.

One thing I appreciated, aside from the beautiful art, was that there were no ads during the story. When you open the comic book, the story started immediately. There was no intro, no unnecessary huge text, and no funny-looking page numbers on the bottom of each page. I loved this...a lot. Usually when you open a comic book nowadays that was published by Marvel, or DC, you'll find tons of ads between the main story, and maybe even just 12 pages of the actual comic. This comic is exactly what I want in a good read today.

I recommend this to video game collectors and Metal Gear Solid fans all over. If you have not played the previous Metal Gear Solid games, this would be a good start to understanding the series.
