Book Review: You Are Not Your Brain: The 4-Step Solution for Changing Taking Control of Your Life by Jeffrey M. Schwartz and Rebecca Gladding

You Are Not Your Brain is a wonderful, ground-breaking book about how to regain control of our thoughts and feelings. For most of us, our thoughts run wild, many times without rhyme or reason. These thoughts and feelings can be very disruptive to our happiness and well-being. Most of these disruptive thoughts are habitual and have been ingrained by repetition. Over time, this can make us slaves to these thoughts and feelings.

Authors Jeffrey M. Schwartz and Rebecca Gladding show that nothing can be as damaging to us as when our thoughts attack our self-worth, questions our abilities, overpowers us with cravings, and tries to dictate our actions.  Your brain can cause us to believe things that are simply false. This is because our brain responds to feelings and thoughts unconsciously and as a matter of habit. If we believe and go along with what our brain dictates at all times, we can be prone to many deceptive and potentially destructive messages.

Thus, to take control of our brain, we should embark on a Schwartz’s and Gladding’s four-step program to make conscious some of our disruptive brain messages such as overthinking, panicking by unfounded fears, blaming and chastising ouselves, engaging in unhealthy behaviours, and reverting to past patterns that haven’t been working.

This approach will help us to identify and deal with the majority of our problems, not just one symptom, because Schwartz' and Gladding's focus on the underlying, unifying cause of distress which is our deceptive brain messages. In other words, You Are Not Your Brain will empower the reader to approach life’s ups and downs in a skilful way, using just four easily learned steps. The reader will find that repeated practise with the Four Steps will transform his life. This will give most readers the necessary power to become the person you want to be.
