Why did you pick that one? What does this quote mean to you? Obviously you identify with this message or feel some connection, what’s the story? Kenny Luck has compiled a collection of mostly “one-liners” from the writings of Henry David Thoreau. In the introduction, Luck writes of visits to Walden Pond along with a few comments on Thoreau’s writings.
Then we plunge headlong into almost two hundred pages of quotations from Thoreau, one of the great thinkers and writers of our time. The book is filled with illustrations by Herman Rorschach — oops, sorry, I meant Jay Luke and Ren Adams.
Luck has organized his collection into three categories: society and government, spirituality and nature, and finally, love. To further assist the reader, the index references the quotations by more specific topics arranged alphabetically from “adventures” and “air” to “woods,” “world” and “year.” We love stories and it would have been great to learn more about Luck, why he chose each quotation and how we could benefit from his selections.
The most significant artwork is “Woodland Visitors” by Nicholas P. Santoleri and is credited as the “Cover Painting” for the book. The painting is available for purchase and the proceeds go to a special project.
The Walden Woods Project is a nonprofit organization founded in April 1990 by Don Henley (Grammy Award-Winning recording artist and member of the Eagles) to preserve the historic and environmentally sensitive land near Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts. Parcels of historic Walden Woods surrounding Walden Pond, the famed retreat of Henry David Thoreau, were threatened by the development of condominiums and an office park.
Each print has been individually hand signed by the artist and one of these celebrities: Kirstie Alley, Jimmy Buffett, Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Hanks, Don Henley, Bette Midler, and Jack Nicholson. Each print is individually numbered and comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist and a thank-you letter from The Walden Woods Project.
The edition is limited to 2,500 prints.

I came to Thoreau early, when I was also reading Hunter S. Thompson and Jack Kerouac and listening to Bob Dylan. I was about 14/15 years old. I left all of them in my late 20s and 30s. I raised a family, tried to be "responsible", and now I'm 54 and for about 4 years I've been back to my roots - and Thoreau is there.
I use a Thoreau quote at the beginning of my memoir - ACCIDENTAL LESSONS.
"The price of anything is worth the amount of life you exchange for it."
I'm so pleasured to be back re-reading Thoreau.
