Book Review: The Skin Care Answer Book by Mark Lees

The skin is the largest organ of the body. It performs many functions such as protection, sensation, elimination of waste from the body, and more. It is a large part of the body’s immune system, and is the first line of defense in preventing infection.

Skin cancer is on the rise. Baby boomers are starting to show signs of age, and are not happy about it. More and more people are suffering from acne, not just as adolescents, but also as adults. There are now more cases of eczema, psoriasis, rosacea than ever. Skin care professionals are constantly asked questions like “why is this happening?” and “what can I do about it?”

Mark Lees, Ph.D. decided it was time to give people their answers by writing The Skin Care Answer Book: Real-World Answers to 275 Most-Asked Skin Care Questions (Foreword by Howard Murad, M.D.).

This book, though scientific, is written in a way that is very readable. It is organized into chapters that provide information in question and answer format about specific skin concerns and disorders.

For example, Chapter 5 is named “Dry Skin”, and answers questions specific to this condition. Questions such as “What causes dry skin”, “Are there any ingredients or products that I should avoid for dry skin?”, and “Why does dry skin itch?” are answered accurately, clearly and concisely.

My favorite chapter in The Skin Care Answer Book is Chapter 8: “Skin Care Products and Ingredients”. As a skin care junkie, I have always kept abreast of skin care ingredient technology, but until I went to school for skin care I had no idea what ingredients like antioxidants, peptides, AHAs, BHAs, liposomes, etc. actually did for my skin.
