This is a fact, a hard fact and one that I did not know and was shocked to find out.
The Safehouse is a fast-paced, very intense book about domestic violence and abused women. Inside the pages we meet Detective Jessie Warren, whose ex-husband was abusive towards her. She broke free and now she helps those women trying to get free. She takes them to a shelter run by a sweet woman named Karen. If that does not work and the husbands find their families there, they can be taken to the safehouse, but that is a last resort.
I enjoyed T. Thomas Ackerman's book. I absolutely loved the scene between Jessie and her daughter Samantha's boyfriend who accidentally left a bruise on Samantha's arm. Jessie went to his house and really let him have it. It was touching and amusing at the same time.The safehouse is staffed by two strong women, Janice and Cassandra. These two are all Jessie needs in helping her to keep the most threatened women safe. They both have their own story but the author does not tell us all the details in this book. I quickly bonded with Cassandra even with the little knowledge of her that was given. I know she has a story to tell. I would have loved to have learned more about her and how she got to where she is now.
The problem I had with The Safehouse centers around cover-ups. It seems that everyone is dirty or helping to hide the dirt and I found it hard to believe. Some of the things Jessie did were a little too much for me as well, such as having an abused woman lie about how her husband died to save her from prison, and the way she took care of abusive husbands who crossed the line.
