Book Review: The Plan by Dan Hannan and Douglas Carswell

Part of: Reviews in Brief

Just finished reading The Plan by Dan Hannan MEP and Douglas Carswell MP, a book where they lay out their plan to improve Britain. In fact, the sub-heading is Twelve Months to Renew Britain, if any explanation were needed. If an incoming British government were searching for a plan of action, the pair has set one out in clear and concise language that even the dimmest politician could understand.

That is not just PR either; the pair truly lay out a comprehensive plan for reviving the UK and stopping its rapid decline in the nether regions of Western democracies. Included are detailed policy ideas, as well as pre-written laws for a new government to pass. They have plans to stop the rot in education, policing and even foreign policy. There is even a list of various daft and intrusive laws that need to be gotten rid of, 30, to be exact.

Now, you might not agree with all of what they have to say. You have to admire the work and dedication that went to writing such a clear, concise, but complete book. Politicians are not known for remembering that "brevity is the soul of wit," these two are the exception. Many can criticise, but few are able to put their solution into words as well as these two gentlemen. To someone who has read many books of political theory and theorising, their style is a welcome change from the normal dry prose.

Oh, yes, and it was printed, not via a traditional publisher, but via print-on-demand. Unlike many of their counterparts these two get new technology. It's not hard to see why the book shot up the Amazon politics charts in the UK.
