Book Review: The Book Club by Kate McCabe

Marian Hunt has a great new apartment that she'd love to entertain in. The problem? She has no one to entertain. So, Marian decides the best way to meet new people as well as fill her new home with conversation and laughter is to start a book club.

She begins posting flyers and before long she has a diverse group of people assembled. There's Christy Grimes, who joins only to accompany his wife Ellie. Ellie is recovering from a stroke and Christy believes that having a group of people to discuss the books she loves with will benefit Ellie in more ways than one. Little does Christy know what an effect it will have on his life as well.

There's also Liz Broderick, who joins the group as somewhat of a distraction - to keep her mind off the pain in the rest of her life. She's still grieving the unexpected loss of her husband and though her friends have been encouraging her to meet new people and get out of the house, until now she hasn't been up to it. Then she hears about the book club and finds that it meets her needs in ways she never expected.

Also part of the group are Matt Bolinger and Nick Barry. Matt is Marian's neighbor and has been trying to figure out how to ask her out for weeks. He's hoping the book club is the perfect way to get to know her. Nick is a former poet who joins the book club as part of his research for a new book. Nick wants to know what readers are looking for in a book - what makes them love a book - and he figures the book club is the perfect way to find out.

These characters and more make up The Book Club. The title alone had me looking forward to reading it. I wasn't disappointed. I didn't expect a novel about a book club to be able to deliver so much at once - romance, betrayal, deceit, and mystery all help to create a book that readers won't want to put down. Each character becomes an individual story as well as part of what makes up the story of the book club itself. The book has unique plotlines, loveable characters and best of all - great writing.
