Book Review: SuperImmunity: The Essential Nutrition Guide for Boosting Your Body's Defenses to Live Longer, Stronger, and Disease Free by Joel Fuhrman MD

In SuperImmunity: The Essential Nutrition Guide for Boosting Your Body's Defenses to Live Longer, Stronger, and Disease Free by Joel Fuhrman MD, there is a good discussion of the top foods which provide the highest nutrient value for purposes of maintaining long-run health and wellness.

Examples of superfoods, according to Fuhrman, are bok choy, asparagus, cabbage, red peppers, broccoli and winter squash. These foods have phytochemicals which accomplish specific health tasks like inducing detoxification enzymes, controlling free radicals, the deactivation of cancer agents, the protection of cells from toxins, the repair of damaged DNA, inducing anti-fungal or anti-bacterial properties and improving the immune system over time.

The foods with the highest nutrient value are kale, collards, watercress, brussel sprouts and spinach, the author says. He names specific foods with anti-cancer properties. In addition, the author indicates that micronutrients include vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytochemicals.

Examples of high nutrient foods include onion, garlic, flaxseed with cancer lignans and pomegranates. Sesame seeds are known to have the highest natural calcium content of all foods on earth. Fuhrman names a specific superfood cocktail which includes greens, onions, mushrooms, beans, berries and seeds. (GOMBBS)

The author provides some important information on vaccines which includes the classic risks from flu shots. The concern is about the other chemical ingredients in flu shots like formaldehyde, thiemerosol (mercury) and others. Sometimes, flu shots can cause joint pain or lymph node swelling, according to the author.

Fuhrman discusses how vitamin and mineral deficiencies can be associated with certain diseases. For instance, reduced levels of zinc make people more susceptible to infections. Deficiencies in vitamin D are associated with increased risks of flu. Elderberry extract inhibits influenza viruses. Omega 3 fish oil is known to reduce inflammation, inhibit cancer, protect blood vessels and the brain.

Superimmunity is an excellent reference for achieving health and wellness. The presentation is easy to read. The content will have a profound impact on health and wellness issues. The implications for health care cost containment are considerable.
