Book Review: Star Von Bunny - A Model Tale by Kym Canter

Star Von Bunny: A Model Tale is a cute modern-day fairy tale. It tells the story of Star Von Bunny, a white stuffed rabbit toy who dreams of becoming a model. She heads into the city, gets an agent, lands her first booking, does yoga with Christy Turlington, heads to Europe, gets modeling advice from Gemma Ward, sets up shop in Los Angeles, parties with Dita Von Teese, Rosario Dawson, and Bono, networks at the Kabbalah and Scientology centers, and goes to the Oscars with hair by Jonathan Antin.

The story is told in photos, put together almost like a scrapbook. A lot of time and care has been taken to photograph Star Von Bunny with real celebrities, and at real events. The accompanying text reads like a how-to, narrated by a bunny who only eats fluffy white food. From humble beginnings as a child’s toy, Star takes off for New York, hits up Paris, and finally lands in Los Angeles, determined to be a model/actress/whatever. She never really makes it, but remains positive, if not slightly delusional.

Star Von Bunny, with its sleek hard bound cover and glossy full-color pages, would make a cute gift book, especially to an aspiring model. At a lean 90 pages, and more photos than text, Star Von Bunny is not a exactly a substantial read. It is cute, it is vaguely amusing, but any reader will breeze through it in about 10 minutes (assuming they take their time and enjoy the clever photos) and then say “now what?”
