Book Review: Sherlock Holmes: The Army of Dr. Moreau by Guy Adams

Part of: Reviews in Brief

Sherlock Holmes: The Army of Dr. Moreau is new novel by Guy Adams, the co-author of The Case Notes of Sherlock Holmes. Its story revolves around a Sherlock Holmes character as he investigates several corpses that seem to have been killed by wild animals. However, his brother tells him that it was actually the work of rogue scientist Dr. Moreau, and charges our detective with stopping him.

This is an interesting book. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t caution any potential readers that it bears very little similarity to those classic tales by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. While this tale does feature a detective named Sherlock Holmes and an assistant named Dr. Watson who works from an apartment on Bakers Street in 19th century London, the similarities largely end there.

However, if a reader is willing and able to put aside the vast differences between how Doyle and Adams craft their respective stories, then what is left is a mystery/horror story that is a lot of fun to read. The dialogue, while different than what would have flown from Doyle’s pen, is engaging. His plot is clear and the characters are compelling.

There is, of course, a part of me that wonders why an author would chose to write a novel that uses the character names that Doyle made famous yet create characters and scenes so different. Imitation being the highest form of flattery is the best explanation that I can think of.

Regardless, Sherlock Holmes: The Army of Dr. Moreau is a lot of fun and a novel worth picking up for any horror fan.

No need to wonder. It's called cashing in greedily on an established name.
