Book Review: Saving Each Other: A Mother/Daughter Love Story by Victoria Jackson, Ali Guthy and Mim Eichler Rivas

Saving Each Other is an inspiring story about how an illness can strengthen the bond between mother and daughter forever.

There is nothing worse than for a mother to hear that her daughter has a life threatening autoimmune disease. Yet, this is precisely what happened to Ali Guthy, a beautiful fourteen year old adolescent girl who had her whole life ahead of her. Before the diagnosis, Victoria (Ali’s mother) was so involved in her role of being a mother to three beautiful children Evan, Ali, and Jackson. She was living the American Dream. After a troubled childhood and a lack of formal education, Victoria created a successful cosmetics company which was worth half a billion dollars. How can one day, one moment, change the whole course of a lifetime for a mother?

This devastating story started when Ali began experiencing unusual symptoms of blurred vision and an ache in her eye. After running some diagnostic tests, Victoria receives the worse news a mother can receive: her daughter Ali has a very rare disease called Neuromyeltis Optica (NMO).  It is little understood and there is no cure for it either. Often NMO causes blindness, paralysis, and seizures. The doctor gave Victoria the news that her daughter had four to six months to live.  Victoria was devastated. Victoria knew she had to stay strong for Ali, despite the fact that it was heartbreaking.

Saving Each Other takes the reader on this uplifting and difficult journey. I felt so many positive and negative emotions while reading the book. But the bond that develops between this mother and daughter conquers all at the end. This book is also uniquely written from Victoria and Ali’s points of view. It is a spell-binding book about life, tragedy, and the triumph that love can provide. What a great book with a hopeful ending!
