Book Review: Ruby for Rails by David A. Black - Page 2

I found this extremely valuable, because like many programmers, I tend to learn as I code, not by reading pages of documentation. I may refer to that documentation later when I need to figure something out, but the charm of this book is that it will help you get up and running using some of the more common scenarios in web development. After that, you are ready to graduate to weightier tomes.

All in all, I found this book worth the cover price. I've worked through it once already, and find myself referring back to it often. I'd recommend it if you are at least a mid-level web developer with some experience with object-oriented programming. People who have worked with Python will catch on quickly, while others might have a little trouble with Ruby's syntax. Still, I'm finding it to be a useful language, and well worth taking the time to learn. If you are looking for a new challenge, or just want to expand your skills to include Ruby, start with this book.

The MVC pattern hinges on a clean separation of objects into one of three categories — models for maintaining data, views for displaying all or a portion of the data, and controllers for handling events that affect the model or view(s).

'; }
Because of this separation, multiple views and controllers can interface with the same model. Even new types of views and controllers that never existed before can interface with a model without forcing a change in the model design.
