Book Review: Mind Your Own Life: The Journey Back to Love by Aaron Anson

Are you a male who is living a repressed and unfulfilled life? Are you angry because you are living a life that is not your own? If you are, Aaron Anson’s book is for you.

Anson’s book is a memoir which examines the social impact of homophobia and how politics and religion has hindered all that is meaningful and authentic in our world. Anson believes that we must get beyond the rhetoric of our political and religious practises in order to avoid homophobia.

Most of us acquire prejudices and biases from our parents. And Anson also fell into this category. He had to go through a lot of trials and tribulations before he gave himself the permission to be authentic and honest with who he really was. Until then though, he got married because he was expected to by his parents. He had two wonderful children. But he felt increasingly unhappy and unfulfilled for over seventeen years until one day he had an epiphany.  He knew that nothing would ever be the same from that day on.

The first thing he did was ask his wife for a divorce. It was granted to him. And then he did a lot more soul-searching. Part of him was guilty for creating a lot of pain and grief to his ex-wife and children. But he knew that all would turn out if only he was honest and authentic with others. And it did!

This is an encouraging and uplifting book. I loved the premise of the book because Anson has a courageous message for all men who may find themselves in a similar predicament. Many men are in unhappy marriages. It is a waste of time and energy to try and lead a double and unauthentic life. All men must have the courage to seek their most authentic and fulfilling life.

Mind Your Own Life will be relevant to all men who are struggling with their lives and living a less than fulfilled life. After reading Anson’s book, many men will be more courageous to pursue the life of their dreams and most importantly to be who they truly are without repressing their identity.
