Methuselah's Daughter was very much a labour of love for J.A. Eddy and Dean Esmay, born out of a site written by Eddy over many years. Like many fiction writers, Eddy nursed the main character in the back of his brain long before she was actually recorded, in virtual or other form.
Now its hard to say much about this novel without giving too much away. However, I can say that the book is about a writer who is commissioned and paid handsomely to write a biography of a mysterious woman after she has a nasty accident, which results in a few amputations and a long hospital stay. The money, as for most writers, is too hard to pass up, so he ends up writing this book with her.
Along the way the writer finds out who and what she really is, or mostly. At first sceptical, he becomes a believer in her and what she has to say. The book is told via a series of flashbacks, modern-day scenes and intertwinning tales. It runs fairly smoothly and is well-written. My only criticism is that it is a wee bit too long and rather drags a bit at times. Of course, saying that I find most current novels suffer from the same problem.
Overall, this an entertaining fantasy read that involves the reader and takes them along for the ride. For a first novel for both writers, it's quite good; let's hope they see fit to produce another such in the future.
The fact the book is written by two bloggers is all the more reason to purchase it. There are many writers with big publishing houses that can't write this well. Good writing is something to be savoured and supported. Well done to both.
