There are tens of thousands of people in the military all over the continental United States and overseas, and seemingly just as many reasons that military wives hate moving around and deployments. The number one reason is they simply do not know how to use all of the great tools that the military put into place for the civilian counterpart of enlisted men and women.
The founder of CinCHouse.com, a website for spouses of enlisted service men and women, author Meredith Leyva, has created a survival guide for any military spouse or significant other. Her book Married to the Military: A Survival Guide for Military Wives, Girlfriends, and Women in Uniform is an easy read.
Meredith Leyva is a seasoned military wife. This book was written for anyone who is a spouse of military personnel, and will help you make decisions during your family’s military experience. One of the best things about this book is that it wasn’t written for any one branch of the military, but instead contains general information for anyone affiliated with any branch of the military.
The book covers a wide variety of topics, including: jargon, career tracks, relocation, military pay, what to wear, family strategy, vacation, and death just to name a few. She has put together some extremely touchy subjects in the creation of this book. She has also taken some examples from a book named The Savvy Sailor.
There are copies of pay stubs to help the spouse understand how their service member is getting paid. Each chapter is written as though the author is talking to you, not at you; the 14 chapters are titled with a quick wit that will make even a high strung person laugh out loud. For example, chapter five is titled Protocol, or How to Get Along in a Hierarchy. My personal favorite is Chapter 10, Marriage Hoo-ah! In this chapter, the reader gets an overview of how to manage your service members’ career and at the same time succeed yourself.
