Book Review: Love The Universe In You: Bliss by Dean Pusell

Love The Universe In You: Bliss by Dean Pusell is a serious look at the world through a prism in the life of Dean Pusell. He grew up in Queensland, Australia and had a tragic life-altering accident in the ocean. He is now confined to a wheelchair for life.

This accident slowed down his world from things he once liked to a deep appreciation of nature, color, music and words. His book consists of 254 short poems which emphasize being and nature.

In "The Soul Behind Words," Pusell describes how wonderful it would be to experience a single day without war and the lessons for humanity. In "She's An Opal Dream," Pusell relates a pretty jewel carved out by him as a reflection of his imperfect heart. In "The Battle of Being," Pusell describes the continuing struggle between the mind and the reality of what is perceived during the course of everyday existence. In "Purpose," Pusell describes how the eternal dream formulates from a seed to a living tree.

The presentation is peppered with numerous pictures which depict the moods the author wishes to convey. For instance, Pusell shows a group of kangaroos grazing on the land. In another scene, he shows a whale emerging from the ocean triumphantly. In a nocturnal scene, Pusell shows numerous campfires burning atop a hill contrasted against a dark sky. In yet another nocturnal scene, Pusell shows grasslands and a fence contrasted against a sunset sky with clouds.

Love The Universe In You: Bliss is a beautiful book of poetry which contrasts the beauty of nature against the tragedy and confinement of his lifelong consignment to a wheelchair. Pusell does succeed in conveying a deep appreciation of nature and the need for all of us to slow down long enough to smell the roses on occasion.
