Book Review: Lies Young Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss and Dannah Gresh

Part of: The Spirit of Christianity

The more I mature spiritually, the more I realize that the cause of every fall begins with a lie from Satan. Fortunately, Nancy Leigh DeMoss and Dannah Gresh have written a book to help young women understand this process and how it affects them. Their book, Lies Young Women Believe, also teaches practical steps to overcome these lies from Satan.

Published in 2008, Lies Young Women Believe is the successor of DeMoss’s best-selling book, Lies Women Believe. Co-author, Dannah Gresh, is the bestselling author of And the Bride Wore White, and What Are You Waiting For, which I have also reviewed. Both authors have been serving the Christian community for years.

Lies Young Women Believe is the result of years of research and surveys taken all over the U.S. One thousand young women in 10 different U.S. cities participated in a “Blazing Lies Test,” and 100 of those young women participated in a two-hour discussion group. The data from these activities was recorded and used to identify the top 25 lies young women believe.

The topics of these lies range from lies about God, to lies about the media, and everything in between.  Some of the lies include: "I can't overcome my sin," "God is not really involved in my life," and "Beautiful girls are worth more."  I found the topics highly relevant for modern girls, and I would highly recommend the book to any young woman, (Christian or not) between the ages of 13 and 25.

Gresh and DeMoss expose the truths to these lies, which they find in God's word.  They also explain how to combat a lie when Satan first whispers it in your ears.  The truths revealed in the book are fundamental to Christian beliefs, yet sadly and severely under-taught in our churches and organizations.

This book is a great building block for any young woman looking for answers to life’s deepest questions. Gresh and DeMoss did a wonderful job researching and writing the information contained in this easy to read but deeply convicting book.
