Book Review: Lab 257 by Michael Carroll - Page 3

The book jacket contains a blurb from Mario Cuomo, the former governor of New York, who says:

If we're lucky, someone in the media will read this carefully researched, chilling expose of a potential catastrophe and force the government to do something about it. If not, Mike Carroll's brilliant work will have been wasted and we may be the victims, once again, of government inadvertence.

Unfortunately, there have been governmental investigations and media exposes; each, in time, blows over. And Plum Island keeps operating, much as it always has. Lab 257 isn't an expose of secret government programs to "weaponize" viruses. It's about the secrecy and unresponsiveness of a governmental bureaucracy and the potential for harm that can result. Candidly, that may be even more terrifying.

"...a far more dangerous reality: a government run by incompetent, self-aggrandizing politicians where bureaucracy undercuts logic and the population is at risk more because of shoddy attention to detail or neglect rather than overt malice."

Unfortunately I don't think this is limited to the government. This malady is striking all levels of society.
