Book Review: Knitting in the Sun by Kristi Porter

Part of: Knit Picks

During the summer months, it is difficult to get the inspiration to knit. Who ever thinks, “I know it is 102 degrees outside, but I really feel like knitting a sweater.” Kristi Porter brings us Knitting in the Sun: 32 Projects for Warm Weather. The versatile and flattering knits are divided into chapters by style: accessories, sleeveless, short sleeves, cardigans, and odds & ends. All patterns are designed specifically for lighter yarn fibers: linen, cotton, silk, and bamboo, to name a few. Most patterns offer sizing up to 2X, with some even going to 4X.

“Bardini” is a cloche in linen, but the brimless hat is useless in the sun. Luckily, “Windansea” takes care of that, using millinery wire to make a brim. “Cinnamon Bay” is an ingenious round beach blanket with a thick knit cord around the edge that can be cinched into a beach bag. “Queensway Bay” is described as a tunic, but it is really a lovely slip dress, with an eyelet handkerchief hem and a ribbon-trimmed bodice. “Ludington” is a surprisingly attractive tube top with a smocked bodice and skirted body. “Aviara” is a very attractive, flattering wrap top with flutter sleeves and lace trim. “Hollyhock” is a simple knit tee with an interlocking diamond eyelet design down the front. “Tofino” is another attractive knit, this one knit from the top-down with wide-set cap sleeves and a fitted shape.

For those chilly summer evenings, there is the “Alishan,” a long sleeve hooded pullover made of a light-as-air blend of linen and mohair. “Lakeshore” is a long lace tunic that reminds me of ocean waves, and would be a great swimsuit cover-up. Also good for a cover-up is “Montague,” a ripple-stitch tunic. All in all, this is a delightful and wearable collection.
