Book Review: KaChing: How to Run an Online Business that Pays and Pays by Joel Comm

Joel Comm's new book starts with a picture of the web as a giant money button connected to internet tools that work to produce a non-stop "ka-ching" sound — if you know how to approach doing business online. If only making money online was as easy as pushing a green button.... It certainly isn't.

That said, if anybody knows from experience how to make money online using various methods, Joel Comm certainly does. Since the 1990s Joel's reinvented himself online from a game site developer then onto a successful AdSense publisher and online marketing authority, and most recently, a best-selling author.

Joel's new book is a departure from his earlier books, the AdSense Code and Twitter Power, which cover a narrow segment of Internet marketing. Instead, KaChing gives an overview of multiple internet business models that work, rather than a single approach to making money and business connections online.

KaChing: How to Run an Online Business that Pays and Pays outlines a basic approach to choosing a potential focus or topic unique to you and creating good quality content (text copy). Joel walks the reader through monetizing your online content with advertising and some other methods to create money-generating web products beyond building a website.

I've been marketing online for over 10 years as an SEO consultant and keyword research expert. While I've used most of the methods outlined in KaChing, I did find a few new ideas and some interesting online resources I did not know about (in my case, in the chapter about membership sites).

For someone new to online marketing, KaChing won't give you the details on everything you'll need to know to be a financial success. What you will get, though, is a good road-map to what is available for making money online — with some good ideas — that will get you started in a new direction.
