Book Review: Journal It! Perspectives in Creative Journaling by Jenny Doh

I love to craft but coming up with new creative art journal ideas can be challenging. Sometimes I feel like I have crafters' block because I can only think of ideas that I've already tried. Sometimes we all need a few visual prompts to get our creative juices flowing again. Journal It! Perspectives in Creative Journaling by Jenny Doh offers a collection of 19 of the best teachers, authors and artists who work in mixed media. They showcase their favorite signature techniques and offer helpful tips and creativity boosters for art journaling.

Each chapter features a different mixed media artist and showcases several examples of his or her work and a brief description of the style or method employed. Also included in each chapter is a project with detailed instructions, photographs, and a supplies list. Several examples of the finished projects are included and you can follow their project exactly or take it as a starting point for your own art journaling project. I really love that many of the artists include helpful tips and advice. As someone who is just starting out with art journaling, it's great to be able to learn from those that are more experienced.

There is a huge range of project ideas included in this book. Some are great for the beginner and others will require more experience. Not all of the ideas are "flat" journaling ideas. There are some really creative ideas for 3D works of art. Projects are created with a variety of techniques including painting, drawing, stenciling, tree rubbing, and even photography. You will easily be able to find a starting point for your own art journaling project. At the end of the book is a glossary where you will learn many of the words used throughout the book. You will also learn more about each artist and be able to visit each of their websites to learn more about their work.

If you find yourself stuck for ideas when you're creating an art journal or you'd like to expand your techniques, Journal It! Perspectives in Creative Journaling is definitely the place to start looking for new ideas and inspiration.
