Book Review: Horses and Heroin by Bev Pettersen

Bev Pettersen writes an awesome book! I was drawn in right away. I read most of Horses and Heroin over my son’s naptime one afternoon. I couldn’t put it down! I call this a “chick-book” which is basically on the same level as a “chick-flick” and for me, these chick-type creations are a must for me!

Megan is a 30-something woman on a hunt for information on her missing brother. She enrolls at a jockey school as she pretends to be interested in becoming an exercise rider. While there is no formal definition for an exercise rider, I came to understand this might just be someone to give the horses a workout. Megan thinks if she can get close to those who knew Joey, she might be able to uncover more details.

Joey Collins, having a past with drugs, is chalked up to have been creating drug connections and disappeared in Mexico on his own will. His family knows that he was recovering and had been clean for some time. This idea was not sitting well with Megan. On her journey to find the truth, she meets a handsome man at the school. He is the best friend of the jockey school owner and sent to the school to teach a drug class to relieve some heat that the school had based on actions of Joey.

Megan begins an earth-shaking romance with Scott Taylor to later find that he is a private investigator. Her intentions are seeking out his help to uncover the truth about Joey; however, she is afraid to expose herself to people at the school.

Day after day she rides and cares for her horses, all while toying with the idea that her and Scott could be in it for the long haul. Not having much faith in men, she is reluctant to trust men. She dives in slowly but also keeping her mission her top priority. Megan finds that things are not what they seem and sometimes you have to learn it the hard way.

You can tell that author Bev Pettersen certainly loves horses. There are fascinating descriptions of the horses and it gives the reader some insight on what it’s like to be a rider. It’s written in the point of view that will make you want to get some cowboy boots and saddle up…in more than just one way!

I recommend Horses and Heroin to all the ladies that love a good story with some sexy romance. It was great and I will be looking for some of her other titles as well!
